I Buddy Read A Book – Here Are My Thoughts! | Discussion Post

Hi, friends!

Today, I’m coming to you with a short discussion post about something that happened quite a while ago: my very first buddy reading experience. For the sake of context, it was with the lovely Cam @ Camillea Reads and we read A Wild Sheep Chase by Haruki Murakami. Alright, now let’s get into it!

1) On-the-go reviewing.  It was very fun to have someone you could talk to right by your side! We were highkey delving into theories and the like, and it was super fun!

2) Bonding experience. Even though both of us had quite some busy times afterwards, I’d say that this buddy read really was something that brought us closer. I really want to do it again someday! We said we’d be buddy reading a couple of other works of his when we’re less busy, and I can’t wait for that moment to come!

rules (1)

1) Syncronization. Ah, this is my #1 pet peeve and also the thing I most struggled with. As two different human beings with two different schedules and annoyingly different time zones (at times), we were often unsynced. I was attacked by tests north, south, east and west and Cam was finishing up on uni stuff. It definitely was a challenge.

2) Unwilling spoilers. This issue has the one just above as a source. Whenever saying how far in we were, even though we’d both be careful not to disclose anything of importance, there would irrevocably be spoilers. We made it through, though! And it was fun.

rules (6)

Did you ever buddy read any book? What are your thoughts on the experience? Did I get anything right/wrong? Do you want to buddy read in the future? If not, why? Definitely sound off in the comments below, I love chatting to you guys! If you enjoyed, please make sure to drop a like or comment and subscribe for similar content!

Thank you so much for reading; I’ll see you on the next one!

Andie, out.

  1. You summed buddy reads up so well! I really enjoy them and it’s so nice to discuss things with someone but life gets in the way and one person or the other tends to become busy. Definitely a struggle but so worth it!

      1. Hehe it’s called The Iron Season by Helene Wecker! It’s actually a sequel to The Golem and the Jinni (one of my favorite standalones), so it depends on if the blogger I had in mind ever gets to reading the first book. But if you ever read it too, maybe we could buddy-read as well! 😉

      2. I’m not too surprised, it’s a relatively obscure historical fiction novel. It’s about a female golem and a male jinni somehow winding up in New York (set in 1899), and…there’s a villain out to get them? It’s a slow-burn romance? It has an Arabian nights feel to it? Lol the plot is a bit hard to pin down, but it’s really quite magical and action-packed. Give it a go when you have the chance. 😉

  2. I love buddy reading, but it’s really a lot easier with people in the same time zone as you. Also, I cannot do with super structured buddy reads somehow. I mostly just tell the person I am reading with what chapter I ended up at and then we discuss once we sync up. Sometimes one of us has more time and just forges ahead. It has rarely been an issue, I think.
